Severe winter chill and dense fog disrupt daily life, prompt extended school holidays

Several states in North India, including Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, have announced school closures and early winter vacations as a result of an intense cold wave accompanied by dense fog and sharply reduced visibility. Temperatures in many regions dipped below 10°C, significantly impacting normal life, particularly early-morning activities and transportation.
Meteorological agencies reported persistently low minimum temperatures along with thick fog, especially during morning and night hours. The fog has reduced visibility on highways and rail routes, increasing the risk of accidents and disrupting commuting patterns. In several districts, visibility dropped to dangerously low levels, prompting authorities to issue safety advisories.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the conditions to northwesterly winds and prevailing winter weather systems, indicating that cold-wave conditions may persist over the coming days in parts of central and northern India.
State governments decided to suspend physical classes in schools to protect children from extreme cold exposure, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where infrastructure and heating facilities are limited. In some regions, winter vacations were preponed, while in others, schools shifted temporarily to online or hybrid modes.
Apart from education, the cold wave has affected transport services, daily wage employment, and healthcare facilities, with hospitals reporting an increase in cold-related ailments such as respiratory infections.
Recurring winter disruptions highlight the need for better seasonal preparedness, including school safety guidelines, cold-wave action plans, and improved urban infrastructure. Experts stress the importance of targeted support for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and homeless populations.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged citizens to follow advisories, limit outdoor exposure, and take necessary precautions as winter conditions intensify.
