What is the Mouse Deer?

The mouse deer, known as chevrotain, is the smallest hoofed mammal globally and is part of the family Tragulidae. Although it looks like both a mouse and a deer, it has no relation to either and signifies a primitive lineage of ruminants.

Tragulus napu (Larger Mouse Deer)

Tragulus versicolor (Silver-backed Chevrotain – species found again)

Habitat and Range:

Located in the tropical and subtropical woodlands of South and Southeast Asia (India, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka).

African cousin (Hyemoschus aquaticus) inhabits the rainforests of West and Central Africa.

Frequently reside in thick underbrush, lowland woodlands, and stay active at night while avoiding detection.

Biological and Behavioral Characteristics:

Absence of contemporary thermoregulation systems present in evolved artiodactyls.

Recognized for their capability to dive beneath the surface for several minutes to escape from threats.

Eating Patterns:

Mainly herbivorous: consume fruits, leaves, and tender plant tissues.

The African chevrotain sometimes eats insects, crabs, and carrion—an uncommon characteristic for ruminants.

Social and Reproductive Conduct:

Favor living alone or in pairs; exhibit territorial behavior within limited home ranges (13–24 hectares).

Males utilize chin and preputial glands for marking territories.

Reproduction:

Single child per birth.

Weaning occurs at 3 months and maturity is reached between 5–10 months.
