Revised plan emphasises ecosystem restoration, community-led conservation, and mainstreaming biodiversity concerns into economic and development planning in line with global biodiversity goals

India has updated its National Biodiversity Action Plan (NBAP) to strengthen conservation efforts in the face of accelerating biodiversity loss, climate change and ecosystem degradation. The revised plan serves as a strategic framework to guide national and sub-national actions for the conservation, sustainable use and equitable sharing of benefits arising from biological resources.
The updated NBAP places strong emphasis on ecosystem restoration, particularly of forests, wetlands, coastal and marine ecosystems. It recognises restoration as a cost-effective tool for enhancing ecological resilience and supporting livelihoods.
Another major pillar is community-led conservation, acknowledging the role of indigenous peoples and local communities in safeguarding biodiversity. The plan promotes traditional knowledge, participatory governance and benefit-sharing mechanisms under the Biological Diversity Act.
Importantly, the NBAP seeks to integrate biodiversity values into economic and developmental planning, encouraging sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure and industry to internalise ecological costs and adopt nature-positive practices.

The plan calls for improved inter-ministerial coordination, strengthened State Biodiversity Boards and better use of scientific data and monitoring tools. It also encourages mainstreaming biodiversity concerns into national missions and policies related to climate change and sustainable development.
The updated NBAP aligns India’s biodiversity strategy with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, reinforcing commitments to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It strengthens environmental governance, supports sustainable development, and enhances India’s role in global biodiversity conservation efforts.
