Renewables, Green Hydrogen and Electric Mobility Drive the 2070 Climate Goal

India has reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, with renewed policy focus on renewable energy expansion, green hydrogen development, electric mobility, and carbon markets. As a rapidly growing economy, India is attempting to balance climate responsibility with developmental needs.
In recent years, the country has made significant progress in expanding solar and wind energy capacity, placing India among the leading nations in renewable power generation. Government-backed solar parks, wind projects, and rooftop solar initiatives have played a crucial role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The promotion of green hydrogen has emerged as a key strategy to decarbonize energy-intensive sectors such as steel, cement, and fertilizers. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India aims to become a global hub for clean hydrogen production while boosting industrial sustainability.
Electric mobility is another major focus area. Incentives for electric vehicles, expansion of charging infrastructure, and support for domestic manufacturing are accelerating the shift towards cleaner transportation. Alongside this, the proposed carbon market framework is expected to encourage industries to adopt emission-reduction practices through financial incentives.
However, challenges persist. Coal remains central to India’s energy mix, and issues such as financing the green transition and access to advanced technologies continue to slow progress. Experts note that international cooperation and long-term policy consistency will be essential.
As India moves forward, a balanced approach combining economic growth with environmental responsibility will be key to achieving its net-zero target while ensuring sustainable development.
