Eurasian Otters have returned to the Gurez Valley, located 123 km north of Srinagar.

It signifies the initial live record of species in the past 25 years.

Concerning Eurasian Otters

The Eurasian otter is a semi-aquatic mammal indigenous to Eurasia.

Their furs are thick and waterproof, providing insulation in chilly water.

Adaptations: Feet with webs for swimming, a streamlined physique, and a powerful tail for movement.

Habitat:

Europe, North America, and certain regions of Asia.

In India, verified in the Himalayas, Western Ghats, and Odisha.

Favors unpolluted freshwater habitats.

Carnivorous: Mainly consumes fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and small rodents.

Conservation Status and Risks

IUCN status: Close to Threatened

Decrease in population attributed to:

  • Loss of habitat (urban development, waterway contamination)
  • Illegal hunting (fur market, disputes with fishers)
  • Pesticide pollution impacting fish communities.
  • Climate change affecting freshwater supplies.
