Major boost to rail connectivity and passenger comfort

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently flagged off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, connecting Howrah in West Bengal with Guwahati (Kamakhya) in Assam, from Malda Town station. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in India’s rail modernisation drive, expanding the Vande Bharat network beyond short-distance, daytime routes to long-distance overnight travel.
The new train is designed to offer high-speed, comfortable, and energy-efficient travel, catering to the growing demand for modern rail services in the northeastern region. By combining the speed of Vande Bharat trains with overnight sleeper facilities, the service enhances passenger convenience while reducing travel time compared to conventional trains. This development is expected to strengthen connectivity between Eastern and Northeastern India, supporting trade, tourism, and socio-economic integration.

The introduction of the sleeper Vande Bharat also reflects India’s commitment to technological innovation in rail transport. Equipped with modern coaches, improved seating, advanced safety features, and better onboard amenities, the train sets new standards for passenger comfort and operational efficiency. The service is aligned with the Indian Railways’ vision of providing world-class rail travel while ensuring sustainability and energy efficiency.
The expansion of the Vande Bharat network to long-distance routes represents a strategic push for inclusive regional development, linking metropolitan hubs with emerging economic and cultural centres. It also reinforces India’s broader infrastructure goals under initiatives like PM Gati Shakti, aimed at enhancing connectivity, logistics, and regional mobility.
By introducing the Howrah–Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, India not only modernises its rail network but also demonstrates its ability to combine speed, safety, and passenger-centric design, bringing long-distance travel closer to international standards.
