Decadal Growth: Between 2014–15 and 2023–24, production surged by 63.56%, increasing from 146.3 to 239.2 million tonnes, with an average annual growth rate of approximately 5.7%, significantly higher than the global rate of 2%.

Per Capita Availability: Increased to 471 g/day for 2023–24, significantly higher than the global average of 322 g/day.

Leading producing states: Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh.

Importance

Economic Impact: India's dairy sector is the largest agricultural commodity, accounting for 5 percent of the national economy and directly providing jobs for over 8 crore farmers.

Nutritional Security: Milk is a significant source of protein, calcium, and vitamins, enhancing dietary variety.

Export Opportunities: India is becoming a provider of dairy items such as skimmed milk powder, butter, and ghee to Asia and Africa.

Women’s Involvement: 35% of dairy cooperative members are female, emphasizing the industry’s contribution to inclusive gender development.

India generates 239.30 million tonnes of milk.

Obstacles

Breed Productivity Discrepancies: Outputs continue to trail behind developed dairy countries, particularly among native breeds.

Pricing Instability: Fluctuating acquisition costs diminish motivation for farmers to invest in enhancements for feed and breeding.

Climate Effects & Market Instability: Intense heat lowers production and increases costs.

Decelerating Growth: Production expansion has decreased, from approximately 6% in previous years to 3.78% in 2023–24, with buffalo milk production falling by 16%.

Post-Harvest Losses: Insufficient cold-chain and processing facilities lead to waste.

Forward Path

Enhance Efficiency: Accelerate genetic enhancement (AI, IVF, native genetics), dietary changes.

Enhance Infrastructure: Establish cold chains, refrigeration hubs, and systematic collection methods.

Broaden Cooperative Network: Include additional farmers in structured systems; community-based cooperatives can reduce wastefulness.

Risk Reduction: Encourage climate-adaptive breeds, enhance animal wellness (vaccination initiatives), and consistent pricing structures.

Promote Inclusivity: Strengthen women's roles via focused initiatives and increased engagement.
