New navigation infrastructure on Brahmaputra aims to enhance safety and promote inland water transport

The Government of India has initiated the development of riverine lighthouses to improve navigation and safety on inland waterways. The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen water-based transport infrastructure and make inland navigation more efficient and reliable.
The initiative is being implemented along National Waterway-2, which runs through the Brahmaputra River. These riverine lighthouses will serve as important navigation aids, helping cargo and passenger vessels travel safely, particularly during low-visibility conditions and challenging river currents.

The installation of modern navigation systems and signalling infrastructure is expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of river transport. This will support smoother movement of goods and passengers along the waterway, which is a key route for trade and connectivity in the region.
Experts note that strengthening inland water transport can significantly reduce logistics costs and environmental impact. By shifting freight from road and rail to waterways, the initiative will help lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions while improving overall transportation efficiency.
