Global shipping disruptions highlight vulnerabilities in India’s LPG import dependence and storage capacity

Growing disruptions in global shipping routes have raised concerns regarding the security of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies to India. As the country relies heavily on imports to meet domestic demand, any disturbance in international trade routes could affect the availability and stability of LPG supplies.
LPG plays a crucial role in India’s household and commercial energy consumption, particularly for cooking fuel in both urban and rural areas. According to energy sector estimates, India imports around 60 percent of its LPG requirements, making the country vulnerable to fluctuations in global supply chains and maritime transport disruptions.

Recent geopolitical tensions and logistical challenges affecting international shipping routes have created uncertainty in global energy markets. Since a significant share of LPG imports is transported via maritime routes, disruptions in shipping lanes or delays in cargo movement could potentially affect timely deliveries.
Another challenge highlighted by experts is the limited storage capacity for LPG within the country. While India has expanded its energy infrastructure over the years, the available storage facilities may not be sufficient to handle prolonged supply disruptions or sudden increases in demand. Limited buffer stocks can increase the risk of short-term supply shortages during global market disturbances.
Energy analysts emphasize that strengthening domestic infrastructure will be essential to ensure long-term supply stability. Expanding strategic storage facilities, improving port infrastructure, and enhancing supply chain resilience can help reduce the risk of disruptions in LPG availability.
The situation also underscores the importance of energy diversification. Increasing domestic energy production, promoting alternative clean fuels, and strengthening renewable energy initiatives are seen as key strategies for reducing dependence on imported fuels.
Experts believe that improving energy infrastructure and diversifying fuel sources will help India build a more resilient energy system. Ensuring secure and stable LPG supplies remains vital for household energy access, economic stability, and overall energy security in the country.
