Central Sanskrit University launches ‘Ayurveda Gurukulam’ pathway to BAMS

Central Sanskrit University has launched a new academic route that enables students educated entirely in Sanskrit to pursue a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, expanding access to medical education for Sanskrit medium learners.

The initiative, called “Ayurveda Gurukulam,” is designed to connect classical Sanskrit learning with contemporary Ayurvedic medical training.

Students who have completed their Class 10 education through the Sanskrit medium are eligible to apply for the program.

The course follows a 7.5 year integrated structure that blends Sanskrit based studies with professional Ayurveda education.

University officials said the model allows students to retain their linguistic foundation while developing the medical knowledge and clinical skills required for modern practice.

Vice Chancellor Professor Srinivas Varkhedi said the Ayurveda Gurukulam has been established under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Pre Ayurveda Program within the BAMS framework.

He said the objective is to strengthen the traditional Gurukul system of Ayurveda education while organizing Sanskrit based learning within the national regulatory structure.

Admission to the program will be through a dedicated entrance examination known as NEET PAP, created specifically for students with a Sanskrit background.

The test is intended to assess foundational competencies required for advanced Ayurvedic studies, while maintaining standards comparable to other medical entrance examinations.

The academic structure includes two years of pre Ayurveda education, followed by five and a half years of BAMS coursework and compulsory internship. The curriculum combines in depth study of classical theory with hands on clinical training.

Students will study core Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita in their original Sanskrit form.

he university said this approach is aimed at strengthening conceptual understanding while remaining aligned with current academic and regulatory requirements.

By operating under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, the university said graduates of the Ayurveda Gurukulam will meet national standards for professional practice and medical licensing.

The alignment is expected to provide wider recognition and credibility to Sanskrit based Ayurveda education.

University officials said graduates will be eligible to appear for relevant licensing examinations, opening pathways to careers as certified Ayurvedic practitioners.

The program is expected to offer Sanskrit scholars a structured academic and professional entry into the medical field without distancing them from their linguistic and cultural tradition.
