BITS Pilani introduces mandatory Social Conduct course for first year students

Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, has introduced a mandatory Social Conduct course for all first year undergraduate students across its campuses, integrating topics related to behavior, ethics, and well-being into its academic framework.

The course, rolled out in the current academic year at campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai, focuses on building awareness around emotional intelligence, relationships, consent, gender sensitivity, and personal safety.

Designed as a credit-based program, it is delivered through an asynchronous online format using interactive modules, scenario-based learning, reflection exercises, and assessments to help students engage with real-life situations.

The curriculum begins with emotional and social intelligence, covering self-awareness, empathy, resilience, stress management, and mental well-being.

It further explores relationships, gender, and sexuality, encouraging students to understand identity, challenge stereotypes, and communicate boundaries.

Core sections of the course address consent, sexual misconduct, and safety, including power dynamics, bystander intervention, digital safety, and the impact of trauma.

It also introduces students to legal frameworks, campus policies, reporting systems, and issues such as substance use and peer pressure.

Developed by Striide, an organization founded by BITS Pilani alumna Nidhi Chaitra Girish from the 2023 batch, the course was incorporated into the curriculum with support from Dean Prof Radhika Vathsan and Professor Indrani Talukdar.

Speaking on the initiative, Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, said, “Creating campuses where every student feels safe, respected, and supported is integral to who we are as an institution. The Social Conduct course encourages young adults to reflect on how their actions shape the communities they live in and equips them with the awareness and responsibility needed to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.”
