Bihar to open two new government medical colleges in 2026

Bihar is set to expand its medical education and healthcare capacity in 2026 with the opening of two new government medical colleges in Mahua (Vaishali) and Bhojpur (Ara).

Currently, 13 government medical colleges operate across 11 districts in Bihar. The new colleges are part of the state’s strategy to create more opportunities for aspiring medical students and strengthen healthcare services in underserved areas.

Health department officials confirmed that the Mahua Medical College and Hospital and the Veer Kunwar Singh Medical College and Hospital in Bhojpur (Ara) will begin operations in January.

Each facility is equipped with 500 beds, with investments of ₹500 crore for Mahua and ₹543 crore for Bhojpur.

Each college will admit 100 undergraduate students. Hostel facilities will be available for students, while doctors and staff will receive dedicated residences.

Operations will adhere to National Medical Council standards, offering departments such as General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, and ICU services.

Patients will benefit from indoor and outdoor medical services, laboratory testing, medicine distribution, demonstration rooms, museums, and autopsy blocks, all designed to improve patient care and medical training.

The state government plans to establish a medical college in every district within the next five years.

Construction is in progress in several districts, with Siwan and Begusarai around 45-50% complete and Buxar and Madhubani at 60-80% completion.

Officials said the expansion will address both educational needs and healthcare requirements for Bihar’s growing population. Modern infrastructure, including hostels, is expected to benefit students and faculty.

Authorities expressed confidence that the initiative will bridge gaps in medical services, providing better access to quality healthcare and professional training across the state.
