Bihar hikes PG medical and dental students’ stipend, revised rates effective from January 2026

Bihar has increased the monthly stipends for postgraduate medical and dental students enrolled in government colleges in the state, with the revised rates effective retrospectively from Jan 1, 2026.

First-year PG students will now receive ₹92,800 per month, compared with ₹82,000 earlier. The stipend for second-year students has been raised from ₹90,200 to ₹102,000, while third-year students will receive ₹112,200 instead of ₹99,220.

The Bihar Health Department announced the revision on Sept 11, saying the increase is intended to provide better financial support to PG students who contribute to patient treatment and hospital services under the supervision of senior doctors.

"A major boon for PG medical students in Bihar, with a significant increase in the stipend for PG students. An important decision by the Bihar government. PG students who play an active role in patient treatment and hospital services under the supervision of senior doctors. They will receive better economic cooperation and encouragement for quality human resources in the field of medical education," the health department said in a post on X.

Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar said the higher stipend would support students preparing to become specialist doctors.

“PG students are future specialist doctors and have an important role in the state’s healthcare system. The increase in stipend would encourage them and help create a better environment for medical education,” he said, according to the statement.

Kumar said the state government's objective is not limited to increasing the number of medical institutions, but also includes developing specialized medical manpower capable of providing better and quality healthcare services to people.

The stipend hike comes a day after the Bihar government revised the monthly honoraria of contractual faculty members and resident doctors.

The honorarium for contractual professors has been increased from ₹1.80 lakh to ₹2.07 lakh, while contractual associate professors will receive ₹1.55 lakh instead of ₹1.35 lakh. The payment for assistant professors has been raised from ₹1.10 lakh to ₹1.25 lakh.

The government has also revised the monthly honorarium for senior residents and tutors to ₹1.15 lakh. Junior residents will now receive ₹75,000 per month, up from ₹65,000.

The latest revisions are aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare services in the state by providing greater financial support to medical trainees and professionals working in government institutions.
