Swain, a seasoned academic from Banaras Hindu University, will serve a five-year term leading Sikkim University as it advances its academic reach and research focus in the Himalayan region.
Banaras Hindu University professor Santanu Kumar Swain has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Sikkim University, a central university in the Himalayan state, the Ministry of Education announced on Aug 8.
As per the official notification, the appointment was made by President Droupadi Murmu in her capacity as the Visitor of the university.
Swain will hold the position for five years or until he turns 70, whichever is earlier.
Currently serving as a faculty member at BHU, Swain is recognized for his academic experience and contributions at one of India’s premier institutions.
He will take over from Professor Abhijit Dutta, who has been the officiating vice chancellor.
Officials said the appointment comes at a significant juncture as Sikkim University works to strengthen its academic profile and research initiatives in the eastern Himalayan region.
The Ministry of Education has informed all relevant bodies, including the President’s Secretariat, the University Grants Commission, and the Association of Indian Universities, about the appointment.
