Andhra unveils reforms to make govt schools better than private

Education Minister Nara Lokesh on June 9 announced a series of education reforms in Andhra Pradesh aimed at raising the standards of government institutions above those of private schools.

Speaking at the ‘Shining Stars Awards 2025’ ceremony, he said, “We aim to achieve remarkable progress within the next four years.”

The event celebrated the achievements of 95 Class 10 students and 26 intermediate toppers and also marked the launch of a 100-day action plan to improve government junior colleges.

The action plan includes key initiatives such as providing free textbooks and midday meals in junior colleges.

Lokesh underlined the importance of motivating students to return as future role models. “We want government school students to come back later as achievers and inspire others,” he said.

Addressing the Class 10 students, he reminded them that bigger challenges lie ahead.

“This is just the beginning; real life begins now,” he said. Lokesh also praised the work ethic of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, adding, “Even at 75, he manages extensive programs like the three-day Mahanadu with remarkable energy.”

To students preparing for higher education, Lokesh issued a caution. “One wrong choice can be detrimental. Your conduct should honor your parents,” he said.

Referring to the government’s anti-drug efforts, he added, “The ‘No to Drugs, Bro’ campaign was started after I saw a mother crying in the Chandragiri constituency during the Yuvagalam Padayatra. Poor choices affect both you and your family.”

Encouraging students to remain humble despite success, Lokesh shared his own political journey.

“I chose Mangalagiri, where TDP had never succeeded. I lost in 2019 but worked for five years and secured the third-highest majority in the state. I accepted the education portfolio despite contrary advice,” he said.

Lokesh also announced that the government aims to achieve 100% literacy in Andhra Pradesh within four years through the ‘Mission Akshara Andhra’ program.

He said the initiative was crucial for improving the state’s position in national literacy rankings.

Paying tribute to Army jawan Murali Nayak, who died in Operation Sindoor, he highlighted the state’s sacrifices and lauded the national response to terrorism under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Minister Lokesh assured students of continued support in achieving their dreams.
