Tesla’s plans to enter the Indian market gain momentum following a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and PM Narendra Modi. The Indian government’s new policies, including reduced import duties, aim to attract EV manufacturers.
A Bloomberg report reveals that billionaire Elon Musk's electric vehicle giant, Tesla Inc., is hiring in India, suggesting plans to enter the market following a meeting last week between President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Musk in the United States.
Currently, LinkedIn ads show that Tesla is seeking applicants for 13 positions, including both back-end and customer-facing roles.
The available positions include 'Inside Sales Advisor,' 'Tesla Advisor,' 'Customer Support Specialist,' 'Consumer Engagement Manager,' 'Expert in Order Operations,' 'Service Manager,' 'Business Operations Analyst,' 'Store Manager,' 'Parts Advisor,' 'Service Advisor,' 'Delivery Operations Specialist,' and 'Customer Support Supervisor.'
While the EV manufacturer has had intermittent involvement in India over the years, at least five of the positions, including service technician and various advisory roles, are available in both Delhi and Mumbai.
The remaining positions, such as delivery operations specialist and customer engagement manager, are based in Mumbai.
India has recently reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced over $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
For context, India's EV market is still in its early stages compared to China's. Last year, India purchased 100,000 electric cars, while China purchased 11 million, according to the report.
India may still be a viable option for Tesla to counter its declining sales, which dropped for the first time in over a decade highlighting how Musk’s business and political interests are becoming increasingly intertwined.
