Advanced Navy surveillance aircraft crashed near Strait of Hormuz after emergency alert, adding to mounting in Gulf conflict.

The United States has confirmed the loss of one of its most advanced and expensive surveillance drones, the MQ-4C Triton, in the Persian Gulf during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, marking one of Washington’s costliest aerial setbacks of the war.
Valued at an estimated $200 million to $240 million, the MQ-4C Triton is worth more than two Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, whose upgraded variants are priced at nearly $100 million each. The unmanned aircraft reportedly disappeared after transmitting an emergency “Code 7700” alert while operating near the Strait of Hormuz on April 9.

The US Naval Command acknowledged the incident in its mishap summary released on Tuesday, confirming that one MQ-4C drone had crashed in the Persian Gulf.
Under the United States military mishap classification system, any incident causing damage exceeding $2.5 million is categorized as a Class A mishap. With estimates placing the Triton’s value as high as $240 million to $250 million, the crash ranks among the most expensive losses recorded in the region.
Earlier reports on April 9 had suggested the drone may have been brought down by Iranian air defenses. However, the US Navy’s latest summary described the aircraft only as having “crashed”, adding that no personnel were injured. No further operational details were disclosed.
The MQ-4C Triton is one of the US Navy’s premier high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned surveillance platforms. It is designed for wide-area maritime reconnaissance and plays a key role in monitoring shipping lanes, tracking military movements, and maintaining operational awareness across vast ocean zones.
Its loss is particularly significant given rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically vital maritime chokepoints.
This is not the first such incident in the region. In 2019, Iran shot down a US RQ-4A Global Hawk drone, sharply escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The Triton crash comes amid reports of wider US drone attrition in the Iran conflict. Since April 1, the United States has reportedly lost 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones to Iran, according to ANI citing CBS News.
Those losses are estimated at around $720 million, with each MQ-9 Reaper valued at roughly $30 million or more.
Manufactured by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, the MQ-9 Reaper is a remotely piloted aircraft primarily used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, while also capable of launching precision strikes.
Developed by Northrop Grumman, the MQ-4C Triton fills a critical gap in modern naval warfare by providing persistent maritime domain awareness without risking human crews.
The aircraft works closely with the Boeing P-8A Poseidon fleet, complementing manned operations by conducting long-duration surveillance over extensive oceanic regions.
The Triton can fly above 50,000 feet for more than 24 hours and has a range of nearly 7,400 nautical miles.
According to Northrop Grumman, the drone is equipped with a 360-degree multi-intelligence sensor suite capable of wide-area surveillance and rapid threat detection. It can transmit real-time battlefield data to other military assets, enabling coordinated multi-domain operations.
The company also claims the platform delivers up to four times the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage of other autonomous systems, with 33% greater operational effectiveness, 60% fewer flight hours, and operating costs nearly half those of medium-altitude platforms.
The Triton loss adds to a growing list of US aerial setbacks in the war, with reports also citing losses of major assets including the E-3 Sentry AWACS, A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog aircraft, C-130 Hercules transports, and F-15E fighter jets.
