Trump asserted he mediated a May ceasefire between India and Pakistan and resolved multiple global conflicts, a claim India has officially rejected as inaccurate.
US President Donald Trump repeated his claim that he personally brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, adding it to what he described as “five wars” he has ended around the world during his six months in office.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social on Aug 3, Trump said he has “settled a war a month,” citing conflicts involving Israel and Iran, the decades-long violence between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and other hostilities.
“India and Pakistan were at war. We stopped it. We brought peace through trade,” Trump wrote, calling his approach “the art of the peace deal.”
The White House backed his remarks, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying the President “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize” for his efforts to end conflicts that have “plagued nations for decades.”
She claimed Trump’s strategy of “trade leverage” was central to resolving these disputes, though no details were provided about how these measures were applied in South Asia.
However, India has firmly denied Trump’s version of events. Speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar both clarified that no foreign mediation was involved in halting Operation Sindoor, India’s military action along the Line of Control earlier this year.
Jaishankar specifically stated, “At no stage of our talks with the United States was trade tied to Sindoor. India does not accept third-party mediation on matters concerning its sovereignty.” He added that India’s engagement with Pakistan remains strictly bilateral.
Diplomatic sources in New Delhi indicated that while India and the US have discussed regional stability, Washington’s role has been limited to expressing support for de-escalation and has not included direct involvement in ceasefire negotiations.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has not commented on Trump’s latest remarks, though Islamabad has previously welcomed “international attention” on Kashmir-related tensions.
Analysts suggest Trump’s statements may be aimed at reinforcing his image as a global dealmaker ahead of the upcoming US elections.
Similar claims about his role in mediating conflicts have been made before, including assertions of ending the Ukraine war, which were later contradicted by official timelines.
For now, India’s position remains unchanged: any ceasefire with Pakistan, including the one currently in effect, was reached without outside intervention.
