Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 4 hailed US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative after a breakthrough in negotiations saw Hamas agree to release all Israeli hostages, return the bodies of the deceased, and enter dialogue on ending the nearly two-year war.

The move came after Trump ordered Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza, pressing both sides to begin implementing his 20-point peace plan. Under the framework, Hamas has pledged to relinquish control of Gaza to an independent council of Palestinian technocrats, while Israel would suspend military operations, withdraw troops, and allow humanitarian aid.

Welcoming the development, Modi wrote on X: “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

Cautious optimism amid lingering disputes

While Hamas has agreed in principle, its leaders signaled that several elements of Trump’s plan require further consultation — particularly provisions on disarmament and foreign oversight of Gaza. Israel, meanwhile, confirmed it was ready to begin the first phase involving hostage release but reiterated that its core demands for ending the war remain unchanged.

Trump, who has positioned himself as chief mediator alongside former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, has insisted that halting the bombardment is essential for safe hostage transfers. Egypt and Qatar, long-time regional mediators, welcomed the breakthrough but urged sustained talks to bridge remaining gaps.

The war, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced almost Gaza’s entire population, now faces its first genuine chance of de-escalation. Yet questions linger over whether Hamas will fully surrender weapons and whether Israel will accept international administration of Gaza.
