White House trade adviser Peter Navarro cautions that India’s high tariffs and alignment with Russia and China could jeopardize US–India trade relations, repeating his “Maharaja of tariffs” jab.

White House senior trade adviser Peter Navarro issued a stark warning to India, stating that continued resistance to trade negotiations "won't end well" for New Delhi.
He accused India of imposing excessively high tariffs on US goods and said the country risks siding with Russia and China unless it changes course.

During a televised interview, Navarro repeated his “Maharaja of tariffs” jab, calling India’s trade stance protectionist and detrimental to bilateral trade.
Navarro also criticized India’s increasing imports of Russian oil. He asserted that prior to the Ukraine conflict, India bought only “tiny drops” of Russian crude.
Now, he claimed, Indian refiners are profiteering from discounted Russian cargoes, effectively supporting Russia’s war effort and burdening American taxpayers.
These remarks come amid heightened trade tensions between the US and India. India currently maintains some of the highest tariffs among major economies targeting US exports.
Navarro’s comments suggest that unless India revises its position, retaliatory measures or strained relations may follow.
India has already pushed back against such rhetoric. The Ministry of External Affairs has labeled similar claims as “inaccurate and misleading,” particularly criticizing Navarro’s implications that specific social groups are benefiting from such trade dynamics.
Meanwhile, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently expressed optimism that a comprehensive trade agreement with the US could be finalized by November 2025, despite the geopolitical complexities posing obstacles.
