Russian President says escalating Middle East conflict is already rattling supply chains, energy markets and global industry, with consequences even key players cannot predict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning over the deepening Gulf conflict, cautioning that its global fallout could rival the sweeping disruption triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing a congress of Russia’s leading industrialists on March 26, Putin said the consequences of the ongoing crisis are becoming increasingly unpredictable—even for those directly involved. “It’s still hard to predict the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East with any confidence,” he said, adding that those driving the conflict themselves appear unable to foresee its outcome.

His remarks come amid escalating tensions following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which have widened into a broader regional confrontation. According to a report by Press Trust of India, Putin warned that the conflict is already destabilizing global systems and triggering widespread economic ripples.
He flagged mounting disruption across critical sectors, including international logistics, manufacturing, and supply chains. Industries tied to hydrocarbons, metals and fertilizers are among the hardest hit, with knock-on effects expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
Drawing a direct comparison with the pandemic, Putin noted how COVID-19 had sharply slowed economic activity across continents—suggesting the current crisis could unleash a similarly far-reaching shock. The conflict’s impact has been amplified by the effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
The closure of the narrow maritime passage has stalled the movement of hundreds of vessels daily, including oil tankers and cargo ships, raising alarm over prolonged supply disruptions—particularly for energy-dependent economies.
Emphasizing the scale of uncertainty, Putin said the world is entering uncharted territory. “No one, including the perpetrators of this conflict, can foresee its grave consequences,” he said, underscoring the risk of a prolonged global economic shock.
He urged Russia to brace for a new geopolitical and economic reality, calling for resilience and national unity in the face of mounting instability.
In a parallel narrative, Russia’s state broadcaster Channel One Russia escalated the rhetoric, with a prime-time anchor suggesting the conflict could be part of a much larger global confrontation—one that may only be fully understood in hindsight.
