Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to resign as Liberal Party leader as early as Jan 6, according to media reports citing sources.
The sources have told the Globe and Mail that although it is unknown when Trudeau will tender his resignation but it is expected before a key national caucus meeting on Jan 8.
The report also said it is unclear whether Trudeau will stay on as prime minister or leave immediately.

As per a source in the report, Trudeau had asked Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc if he would like to step in as interim government head.
However, it said that this would not be feasible if LeBlanc would run for the leadership.
Trudeau's departure comes at a crucial juncture as polls show a heavy defeat to the conservatives in the upcoming election to be held in October.
