McMaster Startup Internships: McMaster University is offering an exciting new opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the world of entrepreneurship with the launch of the McMaster Startup Internships (MSI) program. This initiative aims to equip graduate and undergraduate students with real-world entrepreneurial skills while helping them make valuable connections in the startup ecosystem.
The program is a collaboration between the McMaster Entrepreneurship Academy, the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Forge incubator, and the Clinic Innovation Hub. Supported by McMaster's office of the President, MSI will provide students the chance to work with startups and venture capital teams based within McMaster's dynamic local innovation network.
The McMaster Startup Internship program is designed to offer students more than just theoretical knowledge; it provides an opportunity to apply classroom learning in a practical setting. Successful applicants will gain exposure to high-impact startups working in diverse sectors such as clean energy, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, health, and medicine.
According to Leyla Soleymani, Associate Vice-President of Research (Commercialization & Entrepreneurship) at McMaster, this internship program will play a crucial role in developing the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.
"We're thrilled to launch the McMaster Startup Internship program in collaboration with The Forge, The Clinic, and the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship," Soleymani said. “McMaster is truly a training ground for entrepreneurial talent, and we're excited to offer more opportunities for students to make an impact in this space and play a part in Hamilton's dynamic innovation ecosystem.”
The program's primary goal is to help students hone their professional skills and expand their networks. At the same time, it gives leading companies within McMaster's innovation ecosystem access to top student talent.
The MSI program aims to provide students with a well-rounded entrepreneurial experience that will set them up for success in their future careers. John Kelton, Executive Director of the Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship, explained that the program would also accelerate the development of health innovations and support McMaster companies in bringing their health-related research to the market.
"By mobilizing McMaster student talent, we can accelerate health innovations and support McMaster companies to commercialize their health research and have real-world impact," Kelton said.
The MSI program is structured around two distinct internship streams designed to cater to different student interests and career aspirations:
Startup Immersion Internship: This full-time, 16-week position offers students the chance to work at a McMaster-affiliated startup. Students in this stream will take on various roles within the company, including operations, marketing, business development, research and development, and more. This immersive internship allows students to be at the heart of a startup's growth, contributing directly to its business activities.
Investment Analyst Fellowship: This part-time internship is an ideal opportunity for students interested in venture capital and investment analysis. The fellowship consists of six weeks of investor diligence training, followed by four weeks of work experience where students will review startup funding applications and develop detailed diligence reports for investors. The fellowship runs from January to March 2025, and students who are interested will have the opportunity to explore the financial side of the startup ecosystem.
Both internships offer paid positions, allowing students to gain valuable experience while earning an income. The Startup Immersion Internship will run from May to August 2025, while the Investment Analyst Fellowship will take place from January to March 2025.
The McMaster Startup Internship program isn't just about entrepreneurship; it's also about developing transferable skills that are crucial for success in any field. Sean Van Koughnett, Associate Vice-President of Students and Special Advisor to the President on Innovation & Entrepreneurship, emphasized the importance of skills like communication, collaboration, and problem-solving, which are fostered through hands-on experience.
"Experience in entrepreneurship is precious for students across all faculties and career paths," said Van Koughnett. “The McMaster Startup Internship program provides hands-on, immersive work experience in entrepreneurship and a valuable opportunity for students to build transferable skills in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.”
Van Koughnett also expressed excitement about seeing students take full advantage of these opportunities to gain real-world experience with tangible impacts, helping to drive innovation and contribute to economic growth in the Hamilton area and beyond.

For those looking to apply for the Startup Immersion Internship, an information session will be held on November 21, with additional sessions planned for the new year.
