The largest social messaging app in India, WhatsApp, has banned nearly 8.4 million accounts in a single month as part of strict measures against suspicious and fraudulent activity.

The action was made by Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, in an effort to stop the growing misuse of the platform for unlawful activity, disinformation, and frauds.

Meta's most recent transparency report details the rationale behind these prohibitions and emphasizes the company's endeavors to uphold a safe and reliable environment for its consumers.

The prohibition comes after repeated grievances, infractions of WhatsApp's terms of service, and adherence to Indian IT laws.

Millions of Indians rely on WhatsApp as their main communication tool, but the app has been having trouble dealing with impersonation frauds, bulk texting, and fraudulent activity.

This company has put in place more stringent monitoring procedures and proactive enforcement tactics to combat these problems.

Meta’s latest transparency report, covering the period from Aug 1 to Aug 31, 2024, reveals that WhatsApp banned approximately 8.45 million accounts in India.

Of these, 1.66 million accounts were banned immediately due to severe violations. Additionally, over 1.6 million accounts were proactively removed during automated monitoring, without the need for user complaints.

The remaining accounts were banned after receiving multiple complaints and undergoing further investigation.

WhatsApp's decision to take such a significant step is in accordance with Section 4(1)(d) and Section 3A(7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The company has made it clear that improving platform security and preventing abuse while adhering to legal requirements are its top priorities.

WhatsApp has listed several reasons why these bans occurred. The main causes are as follows:

1. Many accounts were banned for violating WhatsApp’s terms of service by engaging in activities such as sending bulk or automated messages using unauthorized third-party tools, spamming users with promotional content or misleading messages, and sharing false or harmful information that could potentially mislead the public.

2. WhatsApp bans accounts involved in illegal activities such as fraud, impersonation, phishing attacks, and financial scams.

In accordance with Indian law, accounts engaged in illegal betting, drug trafficking, or extremist activities are flagged and removed to ensure platform security.

3. User complaints and reports played a critical role in identifying and banning harmful accounts on WhatsApp.

In August 2024, the platform received 10,707 user complaints, with 93% leading to immediate action. Complaints about harassment, abuse, and inappropriate content were among the most common triggers for account removals.

4. WhatsApp utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect suspicious behavior, proactively banning over 1.6 million accounts without requiring user complaints.

This highlights the effectiveness of its automated monitoring system, where advanced algorithms identify patterns of spam and fraudulent activity, enabling WhatsApp to take action before users fall victim to scams.

The extensive prohibitions imposed by WhatsApp demonstrate Meta's continued dedication to user security and maintaining a secure online environment.

The company has implemented several protective measures to enhance platform security, including enhanced verification processes to prevent fraudulent account creation, stronger reporting mechanisms for users to flag suspicious behavior, and tighter restrictions on automated messaging and bulk message forwarding to curb spam.

Additionally, WhatsApp collaborates with law enforcement to track and take down illegal activities on the platform.

WhatsApp is also working to enhance its AI-powered detection tools in order to deal with sophisticated frauds and false information.
