In light of the US deployment of Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs against Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, India is fast-tracking the development of a conventional variant of its Agni‑5 missile, capable of penetrating hardened underground facilities.

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is accelerating efforts to develop a bunker‑buster version of its Agni‑5 intercontinental ballistic missile. This initiative is driven by the recent US use of bunker‑busting weapons against Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, prompting India to bolster its strategic capabilities
Unlike the nuclear‑armed variant with a 5,000 km range, the new Agni‑5 variant will carry a 7500 kg conventional warhead designed to penetrate 80–100 meters of earth or reinforced concrete before detonation.

Reports indicate two versions in development: one for airburst attacks against surface targets, and another engineered for deep penetration—akin to U.S. Massive Ordnance Penetrators.
This strategic push reflects India's intent to adopt a missile-based delivery system for bunker-busting—offering greater flexibility, reduced logistical burden, and fewer costs compared to air-dropped bombs.
The system is reportedly being designed to hit strategic underground assets in adversary nations like Pakistan or China.
