Google Apologizes to India Amid Controversy Over AI Platform Gemini; Questions Raised About Its Reliability: Report

Google recently found itself at the centre of a controversy involving its AI platform Gemini, leading to an apology to India in the wake of widespread criticism and concerns, as reported by TOI. According to the publication, Google issued an apology to Prime Minister Modi after its AI platform, Gemini, was deemed 'unreliable' and returned unsubstantiated results in response to a query about the Prime Minister.

Statements attributed to Minister of State for IT & Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar indicate that the Indian government had issued a notice to Google seeking clarification regarding the discrepancies in Gemini's responses. In a significant development, Google acknowledged the platform's unreliability and extended an apology to Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government.

This incident occurred against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny of AI platforms operating in India, with the government announcing plans to require permits for their operation. Rajeev Chandrasekhar stressed the importance of AI platforms respecting Indian consumers and highlighted the legal consequences under Indian IT and criminal laws for spreading false information.

The controversy surrounding Google's AI chatbot Gemini also intensified as it faced allegations of racial bias and historical inaccuracies. Criticism arose when Gemini reportedly refused to generate images of white individuals and depicted historically white figures as people of color. Amid the uproar, Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, faced calls for his resignation.

In response to the outcry, Google took steps to address the concerns, temporarily suspending Gemini's human image generation capabilities. Sundar Pichai condemned the error as "completely unacceptable" and pledged to rectify the situation.
