The suspension follows Home Minister Amit Shah’s assurance that the BJP, an ally of the JD(S), will support women’s rights.
The Janata Dal (Secular) has taken action against its incumbent MP from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna, by suspending him due to allegations of sexual assault. This move comes as the Congress party steps up its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for endorsing him.
The suspension of Prajwal was decided in a core committee meeting on Tuesday, which included the presence of ex-Chief Minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy. The party has also served a show-cause notice to Prajwal, who is the NDA’s candidate for the Lok Sabha from Hassan.
Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of ex-Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was implicated in a sexual harassment case on April 28, following a complaint lodged by a former employee. The police have filed a case against Revanna under sections 354A, 354D, 506, and 509 of the IPC, accusing him of sexual harassment, intimidation, and violation of a woman’s dignity.
This incident comes to light shortly after Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the BJP will always uphold the rights of women, or ‘matrushakti’. Shah questioned why the Congress-led government in Karnataka had not taken any action against the MP.
Shah stated, “I want to question the Congress, who is in power? It’s the Congress Party’s government. Why haven’t they taken any action so far? We don’t need to intervene as this is a state law and order issue, and the state government should handle it.”
He further added, “This is a grave matter, and we won’t tolerate it. We want to question the Congress as to why the government hasn’t taken any action despite being in power. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should question their Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.”
