Maharashtra witnessed an extraordinary voter turnout of 65.02% in the assembly elections held on November 20, marking the highest participation since the 1995 polls, which saw 71.7% voter turnout.

The state’s turnout this year also surpassed the 61.39% recorded during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 61.4% seen in the 2019 assembly elections.

The election, which aimed to form a new 288-member legislative assembly, was marked by extensive campaigns from prominent personalities, including celebrities, political leaders, and activists, urging citizens to fulfill their democratic duty.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) ensured comprehensive arrangements at polling booths to enhance voter convenience.

Kolhapur emerged as the district with the highest voter turnout at 76.25%, followed closely by Gadchiroli (73.68%) and Jalna (72.30%).

In contrast, Mumbai City recorded the lowest turnout at 52.07%, with neighboring Thane and Mumbai Suburban registering 56.05% and 55.77%, respectively.

Acknowledging urban voter apathy, the ECI focused on bolstering participation in metropolitan areas, which have historically lagged in voter turnout.

Over 1,185 polling stations were established in high-rise buildings and residential complexes, providing amenities such as waiting benches, volunteers, and wheelchairs, as directed by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

Ahead of the elections, a series of awareness initiatives featuring state icons, celebrities, and youth influencers encouraged voter engagement, particularly targeting younger and urban demographics.

These campaigns resonated across Maharashtra, a state distinguished by its significant urban population—home to over 5.1 crore urban residents, accounting for more than 45% of its population.

Despite previously averaging 60-61% voter turnout in state elections and falling below the national average of over 66% in parliamentary elections, Maharashtra has finally broken the pattern.
