Locals of Sandeshkhali, located in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, celebrated on Thursday following the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh.
Sheikh, who had been on the run for the past 55 days, is accused of sexually abusing women and illegally seizing land in the area.
The local community, which had been protesting in the riverine region of Sandeshkhali for several days, took to the streets to distribute sweets and celebrate Sheikh's arrest.
"We are relieved that he has finally been apprehended. We hope he is incarcerated and never returns to this area. He has ruined many lives here," a local resident told PTI.
A woman from the area echoed these sentiments, expressing hope that Sheikh's associates would also be brought to justice. The Sandeshkhali area, located on the fringes of the Sundarbans and about 100 kilometres from Kolkata, has been in turmoil for over a month due to protests against Sheikh and his supporters over allegations of sexual abuse and land grabbing.
The unrest in the area originated from accusations against Sheikh and his supporters of land encroachment and sexual assault. Sheikh had been evading authorities since an attack on Enforcement Directorate officials on January 5.
Sheikh was apprehended on Thursday morning from a residence in Minakhan, approximately 30 km from Sandeshkhali, where he had been hiding with a few associates, according to police reports.
