Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose a symbolic gesture to celebrate the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, arriving at the party headquarters in New Delhi dressed in traditional Bengali attire.
Wearing a white panjabi (kurta) paired with a dhuti (dhoti), Modi’s appearance came just hours after the BJP secured its first-ever decisive victory in the state, marking a major political shift in a region long dominated by the Trinamool Congress.

Modi’s attire was widely seen as more than just celebratory dressing. By adopting traditional Bengali clothing, the Prime Minister signalled cultural acknowledgement and outreach, reinforcing the BJP’s attempt to connect with regional identity following its electoral breakthrough.
The choice of dress aligned with Modi’s established style of using symbolism during key political moments, particularly after major electoral victories or significant national events.
The BJP’s performance in the 2026 elections represents a watershed moment in West Bengal politics. The party, which had previously struggled to gain a foothold in the state, managed to secure a majority in the 294-member Assembly, ending over a decade of rule by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The election, held in April 2026, recorded a high voter turnout of over 92 percent, reflecting intense political mobilisation across the state.
This result marks the BJP’s most significant expansion in eastern India and signals a broader shift in voter alignment across regions that were historically resistant to the party.
During his address at the BJP headquarters, Modi framed the victory as a turning point not just for Bengal but for national politics. He described the result as historic and emphasised the party’s growing presence across the country.
The Prime Minister also reiterated the party’s commitment to development, governance, and stability in the state, positioning the victory as the beginning of a new political phase.
With the BJP set to form government in West Bengal for the first time, the focus now shifts to governance and delivery. The party has indicated priorities such as job creation, welfare expansion, and improved law and order.
As celebrations continue, the 2026 verdict stands out as a defining moment in Bengal’s political history — one marked not just by numbers, but also by powerful imagery and symbolism.
