Muslims have now become 40% of Assam's population compared to 12% in 1951 due to infiltration, says Sarma. But AIMIM's Owaisi refutes the claim, calling him a 'liar.'
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 19 claimed that the Muslim population in his state is growing around 30% every 10 years, and they will become the majority by 2041.
Addressing a press conference, he said Muslims have now become 40% of Assam's population as per “statistical sampling.”
"By 2041, Assam will become a Muslim-majority state. It's a reality and nobody can stop it," he asserted.
The chief minister said the population of the Hindu community is rising by around 16% every 10 years.
Sarma said his government has taken steps to reduce population growth among the Muslim community.
"Congress has the most important role in arresting the population growth of Muslims... If Rahul Gandhi becomes the brand ambassador of population control, it will be contained as the community only listens to him,” he said.
“In Assam, Muslim population in 40%. It was 12% in 1951. We lost districts due to infiltration and demographic change… it isn't a political issue for me. I keep fighting this day in and out,” Sarma said.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi has refuted this claim, calling Sarma a “liar” who “hates Muslims.”
"The CM of Assam is among the top 5 liars in India. In 1951, the Muslim population was 24.68%. He is a liar and he hates Muslims of Assam. in 2001, the Muslim population was 30.92% and in 2011 census, 34.22%. Due to his lies, the entire administration hates the Muslims," Owaisi said.
