Using generative AI in the workplace: Peril or Perk

The New York Times' recent announcement to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into its newsroom highlights the technology's growing dominance over workplaces in different sectors.

According to a 2024 McKinsey report, 72% of organizations have adopted Gen AI in at least one business function, marking a significant increase over previous years.

Undoubtedly, Gen AI is a useful tool to simplify tasks. It can automate repetitive tasks, analyze complex reports, summarize, rewrite, edit and do much more – that too in seconds.

Using Gen AI can certainly increase efficiency, reduce workload, and increase quick turnout.

If we talk about journalism, using Gen AI can easily generate summaries, suggest headlines, assist in research, and conduct in-depth analysis, thereby streamlining the editorial process.

The Associated Press has utilized Gen AI to produce corporate earnings reports, significantly increasing output without compromising quality.

The New York Times has approached AI integration with caution. Editorial guidelines emphasize that while AI can assist in tasks like generating SEO headlines and promotional content, it should not draft or significantly alter articles.

All AI-generated content is subject to human oversight to maintain accuracy and uphold journalistic standards.

However, with its perks, comes its perils.

As AI integration has led to the automation of mundane tasks, it has resulted in the displacement of many job roles.

According to a study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) conducted in 2024, AI could affect up to 40% of jobs globally, with some roles being replaced and others enhanced.

With the adoption of AI by employers, the workforce landscape is witnessing a significant shift where the industries demand proficient employees well-versed in digital and cognitive skills.

Employers are increasingly prioritizing candidates with expertise in AI-related fields, leading to a surge in demand for specialized training and education.

AI integration also raises concerns about ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks to address concerns of data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the societal impact of automation.

Using Gen AI can also cause over-reliance on the technology resulting in redundant content, biases in news coverage and eroding journalistic integrity.

Despite AI being quick, it can’t replace the nuances in a journalistic article that a human journalist can bring.

The usage of Gen AI in creative fields, especially writing, further raises questions on intellectual property rights.

While AI seems to be a great boon for efficiency and economic growth, it presents massive challenges to the human workforce and requires thoughtful policies by governments across the globe to ensure a balanced integration.
