Reportedly, tensions flared up after locals pelted stones at the police team during the second survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid.
The survey was conducted in compliance with a local court’s directive, following a petition alleging that the mosque was constructed after demolishing a temple during the Mughal era.
The situation escalated when the survey team arrived at the site, drawing large crowds opposing the move.
Despite the presence of a substantial police contingent, the protesters began pelting stones, prompting law enforcement to use tear gas and mild force to restore order.
"The situation is under control, and senior district officials are holding discussions to ensure calm," said a police officer in Sambhal.
"Some miscreants came out of the crowd gathered near the site and pelted stones at the police team. The police used minor force and tear gas to bring the situation under control," Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi was quoted as syaing.
Amid the chaos, officials proceeded with the survey of the 16th-century mosque, documenting the process through videography and photography. The head of the Shahi Jama Masjid appealed to the protesters to disperse, urging restraint.
The Shahi Jama Masjid had been previously surveyed on Nov 19 following the same court order. The petition, filed by a local priest, claimed that the mosque was erected over the ruins of a temple allegedly destroyed by Muslim rulers.
