Shivraj Patil, veteran Congressman and former union home minister dies at 90

Former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil passed away on December 12 in his hometown of Latur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90, following a brief illness. A towering figure in Indian politics for over five decades, Patil leaves behind a legacy marked by constitutional clarity, measured leadership, and unwavering public service.

A seven-time MP from Latur, Patil held some of the most influential positions in Indian governance from Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991–96) to Union Home Minister (2004–08). His career later took him to Raj Bhavan, where he served as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh (2010–15).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the veteran leader’s death, noting his long innings across legislative and executive roles. “Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha,” the PM said in a post on X.

Patil is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, a BJP leader, and two granddaughters.

His political journey began at the grassroots as the municipal council chief of Latur, before his election as an MLA in the early 1970s. Known for his calm demeanour, measured communication, and mastery of constitutional matters, Patil was widely regarded as one of Parliament’s most scholarly voices.

Fluent in Marathi, English, and Hindi, he was admired across party lines for his meticulous reading, analytical depth, and dignified conduct — qualities that shaped his long and distinguished public life.
