Security scare near PM Modi’s Bengaluru event after explosive materials recovered nearby

A major security scare unfolded in Bengaluru on May 10 after police recovered gelatin sticks and other explosive materials near the venue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event at the Art of Living International Centre on Kanakapura Road. One suspect has been detained for questioning in connection with the recovery, officials said.

Prime Minister Modi was in Bengaluru to participate in the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Art of Living Foundation and inaugurate the newly built Dhyan Mandir in the presence of spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The recovery triggered heightened security checks around the venue and nearby areas.

According to police officials, the explosive materials were found in a forested area near the event site during a security sweep carried out ahead of the Prime Minister’s programme. Initial reports said the recovered items included gelatin sticks, detonators and related materials commonly used in quarrying and blasting operations.

Authorities said bomb disposal squads and forensic teams were immediately rushed to the spot after the recovery. Security agencies later secured the area and intensified searches in surrounding localities as part of precautionary measures.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the explosive materials were directly linked to the Prime Minister’s visit. However, officials said all angles are being investigated due to the high-security nature of the event.

A suspect was later detained from the area and is currently being questioned by investigators. According to reports, the detained individual is suspected to have links to illegal quarrying activity in the region, although police have not officially disclosed further details about his identity or possible motive.

The Prime Minister’s event proceeded amid heavy security deployment involving Karnataka Police, Special Protection Group (SPG), intelligence agencies and anti-sabotage teams. Thousands of people had gathered at the Art of Living International Centre for the anniversary celebrations and inauguration programme.

Officials said further forensic examination of the recovered materials is underway and additional details are expected after preliminary investigation reports are submitted.
