The initiative comes amid growing concerns over global energy disruptions, maritime chokepoints and supply chain vulnerabilities linked to tensions in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad grouping comprising India, the United States, Japan and Australia has announced plans to launch a new Fuel Security Forum aimed at protecting energy supply chains and ensuring uninterrupted fuel flows across the Indo-Pacific region.
The initiative was announced during the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, where the four countries unveiled a broader Indo-Pacific energy security framework focused on crisis coordination, emergency response and supply chain resilience.

According to the joint statement, the proposed Quad Fuel Security Forum will function as a high-level coordination platform to facilitate policy alignment, market analysis and cooperation during periods of major energy stress.
The move comes at a time of heightened concern over global oil and gas supply disruptions linked to instability in West Asia and threats to critical maritime trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The Quad nations said uninterrupted commercial shipping and stable energy markets remain essential for economic security in the Indo-Pacific region. The statement also stressed the importance of protecting critical maritime infrastructure and ensuring freedom of navigation.
Officials said the framework would include cooperation in areas such as strategic fuel reserves, emergency response exercises, energy technology, policy coordination and international market monitoring.
Energy security has increasingly emerged as a geopolitical concern as countries attempt to reduce vulnerabilities caused by wars, shipping disruptions and concentrated supply chains.
The Indo-Pacific region remains heavily dependent on imported fuel and shipping routes that pass through strategic chokepoints vulnerable to conflict or blockades.
Recent tensions involving Iran and instability around the Strait of Hormuz have renewed fears of disruptions to global oil flows, particularly for Asian economies dependent on imported crude.
The Quad’s latest initiative reflects a broader shift in the grouping’s agenda from security dialogue toward practical coordination in areas including supply chains, energy, ports and critical minerals.
Originally formed as a strategic partnership between India, the US, Japan and Australia, the Quad has increasingly expanded cooperation into economic resilience, technology, infrastructure and maritime monitoring.
During the New Delhi meeting, the four countries also discussed critical mineral supply chains, maritime surveillance cooperation and infrastructure partnerships in the Pacific region.
India and the US additionally signed a separate framework agreement on critical minerals cooperation during the meetings, reflecting growing concern among major economies over dependence on limited global suppliers for key industrial resources.
The latest fuel security initiative signals that the Quad is increasingly positioning itself not only as a strategic grouping, but also as a platform for economic and energy coordination across the Indo-Pacific.
