India's first indigenous military transport aircraft prototype completes maiden flight

India's first military transport aircraft manufactured in the country under the C-295 programme has successfully completed its maiden test flight, marking a significant milestone for the government's defence indigenisation efforts.

The prototype aircraft took off from the Tata-Airbus manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, where final assembly of the C-295 transport aircraft is being carried out. The successful flight is being viewed as a major step towards establishing India as a hub for military aircraft production.

The C-295 programme is part of a ₹21,935-crore deal signed between India and Airbus Defence and Space in 2021 for the procurement of 56 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Under the agreement, the first 16 aircraft are being delivered in fly-away condition from Spain, while the remaining 40 are to be manufactured and assembled in India by Tata Advanced Systems in partnership with Airbus.

Officials said the maiden flight validated key systems and performance parameters of the aircraft. Further testing and certification activities will be undertaken before deliveries of the India-manufactured aircraft begin.

The Vadodara facility, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in 2024, is the first private-sector final assembly line for military aircraft in India. The project has been showcased as a flagship example of the Make in India initiative in the defence sector.

The C-295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft designed for troop movement, logistics support, medical evacuation, disaster relief operations and special missions. It is expected to eventually replace the ageing Avro fleet currently operated by the Indian Air Force.

According to officials, the programme has also helped create a domestic aerospace ecosystem involving hundreds of Indian suppliers, including micro, small and medium enterprises. Several aircraft components are being manufactured within the country as part of the localisation effort.

Defence experts view the successful test flight as an important step towards expanding India's aerospace manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on imported military platforms. The programme is also expected to generate skilled employment and strengthen the country's defence industrial base.

The Indian Air Force has already inducted several Spain-built C-295 aircraft, with deliveries continuing under the contract. The maiden flight of the India-made version now paves the way for the next phase of domestic production under one of the country's largest military aviation manufacturing projects.
