Govt unveils UDAN 2.0 with mega plan for 100 airports, 200 helipads

The Union Cabinet has approved an upgraded version of the regional air connectivity scheme, UDAN 2.0, with a total outlay of ₹28,840 crore, marking a major expansion push for India’s aviation infrastructure over the next decade.

The scheme aims to develop around 100 new airports by upgrading unserved and underutilised airstrips between 2026–27 and 2035–36. Of the total outlay, ₹12,159 crore has been earmarked for airport infrastructure development.

To improve last-mile connectivity, especially in geographically challenging areas, the government has also proposed building 200 helipads. These will primarily serve hilly regions, islands, and remote locations where traditional airport infrastructure is difficult to establish.

Financial support remains a key component of the scheme. The Centre has allocated ₹10,043 crore as viability gap funding (VGF) over ten years to support airlines operating on regional routes, ensuring affordability and sustained operations.

In addition, the government will provide operational and maintenance support to select regional airports for up to three years, addressing cost challenges faced by low-traffic aerodromes.

The scheme also includes a ₹400 crore provision to promote the use of domestically manufactured aircraft and helicopters, including those produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, as part of efforts to strengthen indigenous aviation capacity.

Launched in 2016, the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme has significantly improved regional connectivity by linking smaller cities with major hubs. UDAN 2.0 is expected to deepen this network further and support economic growth in underserved regions.
