Maurie McInnis expresses regret after describing a student’s approach as an ambush, prompting criticism from a campus advocacy group over her response to calls for greater university accountability.

Yale University President Maurie McInnis has apologised after a microphone captured her privately describing a student activist as “pissed off” and saying she had been caught off guard by questions about the university’s negotiations with the Trump administration.
The conversation, involving McInnis and Yale College Dean Pericles Lewis, was picked up during a public livestream of a university update for parents and families on October 10.

McInnis was discussing an encounter with a student from Democratize Yale, a coalition of students, staff, faculty and alumni advocating greater democratic participation in university governance. The exchange took place a day earlier, during Yale’s 325th anniversary celebration as part of its annual family weekend.
“You know we're doing the selfie photo, but they turned on video,” McInnis said, describing how the student approached her. She added that she had reiterated her position after the camera was lowered, saying, “I’ve clearly articulated my principles. We’re not deviating.”
Referring to the student, McInnis said, “She was just one of those students who shows up pissed off.” Lewis responded that such encounters were difficult to avoid and suggested they might see similar students on campus the following Monday.
Democratize Yale confirmed that student Siena Grouf had approached McInnis at the anniversary celebration and urged her to end negotiations with the Trump administration over the government’s claim that Yale’s admissions practices were discriminatory.
In a statement, Grouf said it was “extremely disappointing” to hear the university president privately deride students for raising concerns about democratic participation while declining to engage with them publicly in the spirit of open dialogue.
“Students should not need to wait for a photo op … to ask the president about an incredibly urgent concern shared by a growing coalition of students, staff, faculty, and alumni,” Grouf said.
The group’s criticism centres on its demand for greater accountability and meaningful engagement with university leadership on issues affecting the Yale community.
During the recorded conversation, McInnis said Democratize Yale had not requested a meeting with her. She noted, however, that she had met with two of its members, Alex Chen and Elias Theodore.
The group subsequently confirmed to Inside Higher Ed that Chen and Theodore had supported the organisation and met with McInnis in August and September, respectively.
The recording also captured McInnis and Lewis discussing the scheduling of the family weekend and the university update. Reflecting on a previous year when the event coincided with a meeting of the university’s governing board, McInnis described the day as difficult.
“That was a painful day,” she said. “Trustees are exhausting. Although it will be better without Josh, I can already tell.”
It remained unclear which former trustee she meant. The remark could have referred to Joshua Bekenstein, who served on the Yale Corporation from 2013 until 2025, or Joshua Steiner, a successor trustee whose tenure ran from 2018 to 2026.
Yale did not respond to Inside Higher Ed’s request for clarification.
In a statement to Inside Higher Ed, McInnis acknowledged that her comments had been recorded during a private conversation and expressed regret over her choice of words.
“I said things that I very much regret,” she said.
McInnis added that the remarks did not reflect her approach over the past two years, during which she said she had met with students, faculty, staff and alumni to hear their ideas, concerns and aspirations for the university.
She also expressed gratitude to Yale’s trustees and alumni volunteers, saying her comments did not reflect the value she placed on their contributions to the institution.
“Going forward, I’ll continue to meet with members of the Yale community and hear their wide range of perspectives,” McInnis said, adding that she remained committed to working with colleagues to guide the university through a period of uncertainty for higher education.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the relationship between university leadership and student activists, particularly as Yale faces pressure over its dealings with the Trump administration. It has also raised questions about how university leaders respond to criticism and the importance of maintaining open dialogue with members of their academic communities.
