At least 14 people died and several remain trapped as a stone quarry collapsed in the Aizawl district of Mizoram amid heavy rain on May 28 due to Cyclone Remal. The incident took place around 6 a.m. in the morning in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl town.
Director-General of Police (DGP) of Mizoram, Anil Shukla, stated, “All efforts are underway to rescue the people who are trapped under the debris. However, heavy rains are affecting the search operations.”
"A landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar has isolated Aizawl from the rest of the nation. Several of major roads and highways have also been affected by landslides. Government workers have been asked to work from home, except for those who are responsible for delivering critical services, while all schools were closed," officials said.
Three people went missing after a building was destroyed by a landslide in Salem Veng in Aizwal. They are being sought after.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states over the next couple of days.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma called an emergency meeting with Home Minister K Sapdanga, Chief Secretary Renu Sharma, and other senior officials to investigate the situation.
Cyclone Remal made landfall at around 8.30 p.m. between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh on May 26, with wind speeds reaching up to 135 kmph, leaving a swath of devastation in the wake.
