The singer, responding to a complaint by a pro-Kannada group, posted “Sorry Karnataka” on Instagram after his remarks at a Bengaluru event triggered backlash and legal action.
Facing backlash over remarks made during a recent concert in Bengaluru, singer Sonu Nigam has publicly apologized to the people of Karnataka after an FIR was registered against him for allegedly making derogatory comments about the Kannadiga community during an event held on April 25–26.
In an Instagram post, Nigam wrote, “Sorry Karnataka. My Love for you, is bigger than my Ego. Love you always.”
His apology came soon after the Bengaluru Rural police issued a notice directing him to appear before the investigating officer within a week in connection with the case.
The FIR was lodged at Avalahalli Police Station on May 3 following a complaint from Dharmaraj A, president of the Bengaluru City District Unit of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada organization.
According to the complaint, Nigam’s remarks were “objectionable and emotionally provocative,” allegedly offending the sentiments of the Kannadiga community and stirring tensions between linguistic groups in the state.
He has been booked under Sections 351(2), 352(1), and 353 of the Indian Penal Code.
A video of the singer’s comments has since gone viral, sparking criticism from Kannada activists and political circles.
Nigam, a well-known playback singer with a strong fan following in Karnataka, is best known for Bollywood songs like Abhi Mujhme Kahin and Sapna Jahan.
