The romantic drama faces mounting backlash and boycott calls after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, sparking debate over Pakistani artists in Indian cinema.

The upcoming romantic drama movie Abir Gulal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, is unlikely to be released in India, according to government sources.
The film, directed by Aarti S Bagdi and originally slated for a May 9 release, has stirred controversy following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists and left several others injured.

The project has faced increasing backlash, particularly on social media, where users have called for stronger action against Pakistan and questioned the inclusion of Pakistani artists in Indian cinema.
Khan’s casting has become a flashpoint in this growing debate.
Although the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition in 2023 calling for a complete ban on Pakistani artists in India, resistance from political groups and industry bodies remains strong.
The teaser of Abir Gulal faced boycott calls, which intensified after Khan and Kapoor attended a song launch event in Dubai on April 20.
In response to the attack, Fawad Khan shared a message on Instagram: "Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam (sic).”
He added that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims.
Despite his statement, the backlash has continued. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has announced a blanket ban on Pakistani artists and vowed to block the film’s release in India.
In a statement, FWICE said it would take all necessary steps to prevent Abir Gulal from being shown in the country.
FWICE President BN Tiwari said, "Strict action would be taken against 'Abir Gulal' makers, and the film would not be released in India."
He also noted that no songs or visuals from the film will be allowed to air on any platform across the nation.
Cast and crew have been advised to avoid associations with Pakistani artists going forward.
When asked about the popularity of Pakistani shows on YouTube among Indian audiences, Tiwari acknowledged that FWICE can only enforce restrictions within its jurisdiction.
However, he emphasized that the recent events will likely deepen the divide between the two countries in terms of entertainment collaboration.
Abir Gulal also features Soni Razdan and Ridhi Dogra in key roles and was planned for a worldwide release on May 9.
