The directive covers government, aided, and private schools, introduces monitoring mechanisms, and includes measures to ensure affordable access, awareness among parents, and a streamlined distribution system statewide.

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad has made it mandatory for all schools in the state to use only approved textbooks for the 2026 to 2027 academic session, warning of strict action against violations.
The directive, issued under the Intermediate Education Act, applies to government, aided, and private institutions, making compliance compulsory.

Students in Classes 9 and 10 will be required to study core subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Science from prescribed books. For Classes 11 and 12, the board has specified textbooks for 36 subjects.
As part of efforts to standardize learning, nearly 70 textbooks from the National Council of Educational Research and Training have been introduced, along with 12 additional approved books in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Urdu.
Schools have been asked to conduct awareness drives to inform students and parents about the authorized book list. Officials said steps will be taken to ensure these materials are available at affordable prices.
To streamline supply, three agencies have been authorized to handle printing and distribution of textbooks.
District and divisional officials have been directed to closely monitor implementation. The board said any deviation from the prescribed norms will invite strict action, as it aims to ensure uniformity and transparency in the education system.
