The University Grants Commission has issued new guidelines aimed at strengthening student health, sports participation, and overall well-being across higher education institutions in India.
The advisory, prepared by an expert committee constituted by the UGC, outlines measures to promote physical fitness, mental health support, and a more supportive campus environment for students.

In a notification, the commission emphasized the broader role of higher education institutions in shaping society and supporting student development.
"Higher education is a key pathway for social transformation and mobility along with the upliftment of individuals, households, and communities," said the UGC in a notification.
"The responsibility of HEIs is to provide complete protection to ensure the well-being of students working and studying in a friendly environment," it added.
The guidelines highlight several objectives, including promoting physical fitness and sports activities among students and addressing issues such as academic pressure, peer pressure, behavioral concerns, stress, career-related anxieties, and depression.
Another focus of the advisory is encouraging positive thinking and emotional well-being within the student community, while also fostering a supportive peer network on campuses.
Under the new framework, universities and colleges are encouraged to build a vibrant campus environment that supports academic growth as well as personal and social development.
Institutions are advised to facilitate activities, internships, and community engagement opportunities to help students develop broader life skills.
The commission has also recommended that every institution establish a Students Services Centre to provide counseling and health-related support. These centers would address student concerns through trained professionals offering psychological and wellness services.
Higher education institutions have also been asked to promote regular physical activity by developing sports facilities, introducing fitness programs, encouraging yoga, and integrating sports participation into student evaluation systems.
The guidelines further advise institutions to prioritize student welfare and avoid excessive punitive measures in disciplinary matters. Instead, universities are encouraged to focus on counseling and value-based initiatives aimed at behavioral improvement.
In addition, the UGC has recommended collaboration with medical institutions and the development of trained mental health professionals to strengthen support systems for students within campuses.
