The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognized Bihar Sports University, the first sports-focused educational institution in the state, under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
University is situated in Rajgir, Nalanda district. The institution will be allowed to provide academic programs beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year.
"The university is now authorized to launch undergraduate and diploma programs in physical education and sports sciences,” said the university registrar.

As part of the International Sports Complex at Rajgir, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the State Sports Academy (SSA) and the Bihar Sports University on Aug 29, 2024.
The complex, which spans 90 acres and cost ₹750 crore, contains the first astro-turf hockey stadium in the state as well as an international cricket stadium that is scheduled to be completed in June 2025.
More than 20 indoor and outdoor sports are supported by the SSA.
Shishir Sinha, a retired IAS officer, has been appointed by the state government as university's first vice-chancellor.
Pending accreditation from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the institution intends to offer a variety of programs, such as a four-year Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) degree, diplomas and postgraduate diplomas in sports coaching across multiple disciplines, and degrees in yoga.
The goal of these programs is to give prospective athletes in the region thorough education and training.
The International Sports Complex has eight smaller stadiums that can hold around 10,000 spectators each, in addition to the major cricket stadium that can hold about 50,000 people.
The complex also has specific training facilities for several sports and a top-notch sports library.
In addition to a modern hospital, fitness center, and sports research facilities, there are facilities for athletics, football, hockey, volleyball, kabaddi, and other sports.
