Tripura AGMC gets approval for 100 additional MBBS seats for 2026-27

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that the Centre has approved an increase in MBBS seats at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) for the 2026-27 academic session, taking the proposed intake from 150 to 250.

However, the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) MBBS seat matrix for 2026-27, issued on September 10 with the seat position as of Sept 1, lists AGMC with an annual intake of 200 MBBS seats.

The matrix shows three medical colleges in Tripura with a combined intake of 500 seats: AGMC with 200 seats, Tripura Medical College and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital with 150, and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College with 150.

AGMC operates from the premises of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala.

According to Saha, the addition of 100 seats would take AGMC’s total MBBS intake to 500 from 400, placing it among medical colleges with a 250-seat annual intake, which he described as the maximum permissible intake under NMC norms.

The latest NMC seat matrix shows that 13,186 MBBS seats have been added across India, taking the total approved intake to 140,214 seats. The increase covers 836 medical colleges, excluding institutes of national importance such as AIIMS, JIPMER, NIMHANS and PGIMER.

Saha cited several medical institutions with an annual intake of 250 MBBS students, including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow.

The Chief Minister said the expanded intake would provide more opportunities for medical aspirants while strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Tripura.

The state is also moving ahead with another private medical college in Dhalai district, which is planned to have an MBBS intake of 100 students.

Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for their support in expanding medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state.

“A stronger medical education system today will build a healthier Tripura tomorrow,” Saha said.

The Tripura government is also planning to establish a full-fledged medical university to oversee the state’s three medical colleges, including the government-run AGMC, along with nursing colleges and paramedical institutions.

GBP Hospital Deputy Superintendent Kanak Chawdhury said efforts had been underway to obtain approval from the NMC for the additional MBBS seats.

“We are in the process of appointing around 25 new faculty members for the new project and creating the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the additional medical students. The approval is a big thing for the state’s medical education,” he said.
