Padma Awards 2026 recognize contributions across education, arts, and research

Padma Awards 2026 recognize contributions across education, arts, and research

India has announced the Padma Awards for 2026, honoring 131 individuals across three civilian categories for contributions spanning education, research, innovation, arts, and public service.

Declared on Republic Day, the list includes recipients of the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

Among those recognized for their impact on higher education and research are former University Grants Commission chairperson Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar and IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti.

This year, five Padma Vibhushan awards have been approved. One of the recipients is 90 year old veteran journalist and writer P Narayanan from Idukki district in Kerala, who has been honored in the field of literature and education.

The awards will be formally conferred by the President of India at ceremonial events at Rashtrapati Bhavan, typically held in March or April.

The Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptional and outstanding service, while the Padma Bhushan recognizes distinguished service of a high order. The Padma Shri is awarded for notable contributions in any field of endeavor.

The 2026 list also includes two joint recognitions. Gayatri Balasubramanian and Ranjani Balasubramanian from Tamil Nadu have received the Padma Shri together in the field of art.

n another joint honor, Ramchandra Godbole and Suneeta Godbole from Chhattisgarh have been awarded the Padma in the field of medicine.
