From college dropout to power player: The rise of Vijay ‘Thalapathy’

The journey of Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, widely known as Vijay, reflects a rare crossover from cinema superstardom to serious political relevance.

Born into a film family, with his father SA Chandrasekhar a noted filmmaker, Vijay’s early life was shaped by cinema, but not by academic distinction.

He completed his schooling in Chennai and enrolled at Loyola College to study visual communication. However, his growing involvement in films led him to drop out before completing his degree, choosing acting over formal education.

That decision proved pivotal. Vijay went on to become one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, commanding massive fan followings and commercial success.

Over the past two decades, Vijay has built a formidable filmography with commercially successful films that consistently reinforced a particular on-screen image: a crusader against corruption, a champion of the underprivileged, and a figure who confronts authority.

This carefully cultivated persona blurred the line between actor and public figure, laying the groundwork for political mobilisation long before his formal entry into politics.

His fan base, organised through extensive fan clubs across Tamil Nadu, has functioned almost like a grassroots network. These groups have historically engaged in welfare activities such as blood donation drives, disaster relief, and community service, giving Vijay a ready-made organisational structure that many new political entrants lack.

Popularly known as “Thalapathy” (meaning commander or leader), Vijay occupies a rare space in Tamil Nadu’s public life where cinema and politics intersect with unusual intensity.

The title “Thalapathy,” earned through his film persona and fan culture, has increasingly taken on political undertones as his career transitions from screen icon to political contender.

Despite not completing his formal education, Vijay received an honorary doctorate in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to cinema, underscoring the scale of his cultural influence.

Financially, Vijay ranks among the highest-paid actors in India. Industry estimates place his net worth in the range of ₹450 crore to ₹500 crore, accumulated through film remuneration, brand endorsements, and investments in real estate and other ventures.

He reportedly commands one of the highest per-film salaries in Indian cinema, reflecting both his box office pull and market value. His visible wealth, however, has been balanced with a relatively controlled public image, often emphasising accessibility and connection with ordinary supporters.

His transition into politics came with the launch of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking a direct challenge to the long-standing dominance of parties like DMK and AIADMK.

Unlike earlier film stars who struggled to convert popularity into votes, Vijay’s entry has been marked by immediate electoral traction.

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK emerged as a major force, winning over 100 seats and becoming the single largest party, although short of a clear majority.

This performance has disrupted the state’s traditional two-party system and positioned Vijay at the centre of a new political equation.

His appeal cuts across demographics, driven by a combination of cinematic legacy, carefully crafted public messaging, and a strong youth connect.

The party’s ideological positioning leans towards social justice and welfare with a centrist-to-left tilt, signalling an attempt to balance populism with policy framing.

What distinguishes Vijay’s political rise is timing and scale. Unlike gradual entrants, he has arrived at a moment of visible voter fatigue with established parties, leveraging both anti-incumbency sentiment and his personal brand.

As Tamil Nadu navigates a potentially fractured mandate, Vijay’s next moves — whether in government formation, alliances, or opposition strategy — will determine whether his political journey mirrors his cinematic dominance or faces the structural challenges that have limited other actor-politicians in the state.

For now, his trajectory from a college dropout to a central figure in Tamil Nadu politics stands as one of the most significant political stories in recent years.
