The new textbook highlights India’s early contributions to science, including atomic theory and disease prevention, in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

The NCERT has released a new Class 8 science textbook that draws connections between modern scientific principles and early Indian discoveries.
Part of a curriculum revamp under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the updated book includes dedicated segments titled “Ever Heard Of?” and “Our Scientific Heritage”, aiming to engage students with indigenous knowledge alongside standard scientific content.

Among the featured examples is the atomic theory proposed by ancient Indian philosopher Acharya Kanad, who theorized the idea of indivisible particles or “parmanu” centuries before Western scientists.
The textbook also references traditional Indian practices related to health, including early methods of smallpox prevention and the use of bronze (kamsya) in medicine.
In astronomy, the book mentions the work of 12th-century scholar Bhaskara II, who studied celestial bodies using tools based on water reflection.
The textbook additionally highlights India’s progression from these early methods to contemporary space achievements like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan.
Officials say the updates align with NEP 2020’s emphasis on experiential and inquiry-based learning, and on fostering a sense of cultural grounding among students.
NCERT has introduced these changes after curriculum updates across classes 1 to 7 earlier this year.
The Class 8 science book is part of the next phase, with similar updates expected for other subjects and grades.
