Mumbai Univ welfare schemes aid thousands with ₹2.74 crore in 2024-25

The University of Mumbai has provided ₹2.74 crore in financial aid to economically weaker and socially marginalized students for the academic year 2024-25, marking the highest annual disbursal under its welfare schemes, the university announced.

The funds were distributed through four welfare programs managed by the university’s Department of Student Development, benefiting students across affiliated colleges, recognized institutions, and university departments.

“This initiative is a commendable step to support the educational journey of financially and socially disadvantaged students studying at Mumbai University. Every year, the university allocates a substantial budget to ensure that more students benefit from these schemes,” said Prof Ravindra Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai.

The breakdown of assistance includes:

  1. Book Bank Scheme: ₹1.06 crore given to 27,471 students from affiliated colleges and 57 students from academic departments
  2. Financial Assistance Scheme for Economically Weaker and Backward Students: ₹6.38 lakh to 198 college students and 22 department students
  3. Aid to Scheduled Tribe (ST) Students in Colleges: ₹1.01 crore to 1,950 students (1,103 boys and 847 girls) across 21 colleges
  4. Support to SC/ST/DT/NT Students in University Departments: ₹60 lakh to 120 students in various departments

Applications were submitted online through a dedicated portal designed by the Department of Student Development to ensure transparency and efficiency in distribution.
